Impact of COVID-19 on the education of children and adolescents targeted by specialized educational services and on their families and caregivers
Main Article Content
Abstract
The study analyzed the impacts of the pandemic on children and adolescents, the target audience for specialized educational services (AEE) and their families and caregivers. Descriptive cross-sectional study, with data collected from 97 guardians in a city in the interior of São Paulo, Brazil. The researchers used a form they developed, and the data were analyzed statistically, considering p >= 0.05. Results point to differences in the profile and changes occurring in teaching between public and private students concerning support from health and education professionals and technological infrastructure. Regarding pedagogical issues, most participants reported problems related to low adherence to distance learning and the institution’s conduct, materials and resources offered. Challenges for parents and caregivers were revealed in the form of emotional exhaustion and changes in routine, with associations to the type of school, degree of difficulty, number of people living in the house, degree of disability of the child/adolescent, and difficulty in accepting the role of educator. These results suggest that families and caregivers were impacted by the pandemic, affecting the care tasks and education of these children and adolescents.
