«The choir makes us different and better people!...» Primary school children's views on the experience in a community music project
Main Article Content
Abstract
Based on the analysis of children's perspectives, this work aims to identify effects resulting from artistic intervention projects in the community. It explores the possibility of developing children musical artistic competences, and social and personal competences. The project named Escola a Cantar (Singing School) is happening as an initiative of Casa da Música in Porto Metropolitan Area. Using an ethnographic approach, we monitored this musical intervention project that aimed to enhance the articulation between formal and non-formal education, looking at music as an instrument of children's socio-cultural and affective development. Focus groups were also conducted with children participating in the project. The data seem to indicate that children reveal positive impacts of this project in their lives in terms of personal and social competences, and that, as musical subjects, they recognize the development of their capacity for fruition and development of their musical taste.
