(SLivre) The power of protest in the ultra-periphery: Education, unionisation, and the construction of democracy in Madeira (1974–1978)
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article analyses the genesis and institutionalisation of the teacher union movement in the Autonomous Region of Madeira during Portugal’s democratic transition between 1974 and 1978. Building on a historical and sociological framework, focused on authoritarian legacies and processes of teacher professionalisation, it discusses the impact of authoritarian legacies on public schooling and the opportunities opened up by the revolutionary rupture. Methodologically, the research draws on a qualitative documentary analysis of regional newspaper sources and primary union documentation, with particular emphasis on minutes and communiqués. The study reconstructs the transition from clandestine study groups to a formal union structure, highlighting democratic school governance, disputes over professionalisation and career structures, curricular decolonisation and the tensions between union unity and pluralism. On the basis of the available sources, it is suggested that the adoption of radical rhetoric may have operated, in specific contexts, as a defence mechanism in the face of forms of ontological insecurity experienced by some teachers, formerly agents of the authoritarian state and suddenly confronted with intense institutional instability. The data analysed suggest that teacher unionism functioned as an important arena for experimenting with forms of emancipatory professionalisation, helping to challenge the authoritarian educational paradigm and to assert specific configurations of an autonomous regional identity.
