Abstract
This paper regards the place of school amidst the representations of «young» industrial workers. On this behalf, an ethnography of contemporaneity was conducted on an industrialized community in Portuguese Northwest region, appealing for the combination of observant participation, in-depth interviews and statistical materials. The text highlights the plurality of interpretative tactics that lay under the appearance of the same single act, «school leaving», showing that it can sustain, without any paradox, postures of refusal, realism, resignation or regret.
