Community artistic practices and civic and political participation in the action of three theatre groups in Portugal
Main Article Content
Abstract
Community artistic practices are established themselves as an arena of constructive tension between artistic proposals and political, educational, social and community perspectives. The hybrid and diverse territory of these practices is the space of the construction of this study, that uses semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions within three Portuguese theater groups, from urban and rural territories, that continuously develop community artistic practices. The objectives of the study are: identifying the emerging strengths and weaknesses in creative processes and participation associated with them, and investigating the links between theatrical making and civic and political participation. Conclusions resulting from analysis allow the identification of three themes and respective relationships between them: experiences of civic and political participation before the integration in theater groups; theater concepts; and perceived effects in civic and political participation. Connections between theatrical approaches and educative and community principles, predispositions associated with civic and political participation and broad social, political, educational and cultural contexts of the groups are discussed. These aspects are shown to be relevant in the development of theater concepts that integrate the political dimension and in the perceived effects (individual, group, community) by the study participants.
