What is continuous publication?

Continuous publication refers to a method where submissions are promptly made available online for open review as soon as they pass the review process and are accepted for publication. In this approach, journal issues develop incrementally, with new articles being appended to the issue's content list immediately after they have completed an initial copyediting phase. The "issue in progress" is the current issue that is actively receiving new articles. This issue remains open throughout the year, with continuous additions of new content. At the year's conclusion, this issue is finalized, undergoes typesetting, and is subsequently published as part of an annual volume. 

Why is scopio Magazine AAI introducing continuous publication?

Scopio Magazine AAI is transitioning to continuous publication to better align with the dynamics of Open Access electronic publishing, moving away from the constraints of its previous model geared towards traditional print formats. This shift aims to expedite the dissemination of research to the community, offering immediate benefits to both readers and authors by ensuring quicker access to new findings. The adoption of a continuous publication strategy enhances the open review process by reducing the time from submission to publication and by boosting the visibility of individual contributions, thus fostering greater engagement and dissemination within the scholarly community. 

When will continuous publication be introduced?

We start continuous publication as of Volume 2 (2024).

Will continuous publication affect deadlines for submissions?

Yes, in the new model we only have specific deadlines for submisssions related with the Open call for SCOPIO & CONTRAST International Conference. Received submssions are processed continuously, and submsssions that are accepted after peer review are released online for open review.  

Will continuous publication affect the Open Review process?

Continuous publication will positively impact the Open Review process by enabling Open Review for every submission that is accepted for publication. Upon acceptance, submissions will be preliminarily published online for a one-month Open Review period, during which they will be accessible for public comments. This opportunity allows authors to consider the feedback received and implement necessary revisions and corrections. Following this period of review and revision, the submission undergoes a final copy-editing process. Subsequently, the revised and finalized version is published as an ePub Ahead of Print (AoP), ensuring a more dynamic and responsive publication process that benefits both authors and the wider community. 

Will the journal still have traditional page numbering?

Yes, but only the complete issue will have continuous page numbering. The individual articles that are published while an issue is in progress will, to aid reading of the PDF, be numbered starting from page 1.

Will there be any changes to the way articles are to be cited?

With the adoption of continuous publication, there will indeed be adjustments to how articles are cited. As soon as accepted publications are made available online, they are assigned a permanent Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which facilitates their citation and ensures their longevity in the digital space. During the period an issue is considered "in progress," it becomes crucial to specify the version of the article being cited. This detail should be included in the citation to accurately reflect the version of the work referenced, accommodating the dynamic nature of continuous publication and the possibility of subsequent revisions or updates to the articles.

Articles in Open Review

Articles published after the Open Review period:

Once an issue is complete, the submissions receive traditional consecutive page numbering as part of the annual issue/volume.

Will continuous publication affect the number of issues published?

The shift to continuous publication will not alter the frequency of issues published by the journal; there will remain one annual issue or volume each year. Despite this change, the journal does not impose specific submission deadlines for papers, with the exception of those related to with the Open call for SCOPIO & CONTRAST International Conference. The commitment to publish the same quantity of papers and visual essays annually as previously will be maintained. Moreover, special issues will be managed independently and will not be influenced by the transition to continuous publication, ensuring that the journal's overall output and special projects continue as planned without disruption. 

Will the journal be available in print?

Yes, once a volume is completed and published it will also be available in print with a limited edition.
