The physical and online publication aims to offer critical, explorative and informative text capable of reaching an interdisciplinary audience, making it accessible to criticism and discussion, namely to debate / (re) think Architecture, Art and Image in contemporaneity.
Scopio Magazine will be governed annually by a major theme of interest and is structured through different sections allowing readers to travel between the worlds of Architecture, Art and Image through multiple perspectives and subject focuses.
AIMS AND SCOPE
Created in 2010 with a focus on documentary and artistic photography of Architecture, City and Territory, scopio Magazine is now an Art, Architecture and Image Journal that encompasses a renewed interdisciplinary team integrating the Editorial and Scientific Committee of this periodical. The publication embodies a dynamic information space focused on the dissemination of the themes of Architecture, Art and Image (AAI), understanding these subjects in a comprehensive interdisciplinary way and integrating several research centres.
The physical and online publication being innovative ensures the continuity of the scopio's original graphic identity and brand. An open access, annual, and research orientated publication that aims to offer critical, explorative and informative text capable of reaching an interdisciplinary audience, making it accessible to criticism and discussion, namely to debate / (re) think Architecture, Art and Image in contemporaneity.
scopio Magazine also attends to the involvement of diverse academic, cultural and social sectors in concepts and practices endowed with the strength of innovation for the city, in its multiple aspects, with a special emphasis on those that show a significant use of photography in the critical analysis of the territory.
The choice of the name scopio for this publication is related directly to the word’s etymology – a Greek root meaning instrument to look through a hollow organ, thus being connected to the act of observing and capturing light through the camera. Our aim is that scopio Magazine provides an instrument to “look at” in the sense John Berger explained ”looking” as a voluntary process where one chooses what to see. Thus, scopio Magazine aims to enable critical and innovative questioning and extending our speculative knowledge about architecture in its relationship with art and the image, and about the image in its relationship with architecture.
Sophia Journal adopts standard academic publication procedures, nevertheless it is not limited to traditional academic papers but also includes visual essays that are the result of practice-based research. This means that we are interested in traditional papers, where the incidence is the mode of writing that uses predominatly text, which may or may not be combined with images, as well as in the visual essay format, which allows more freedom and in which discourse takes place predominantly through images.
EDITORIAL POLICIES
scopio Magazine wants to challenge diverse creators to submit original articles, visual essays, reviews, book reviews and other texts of interest that have not been published previously.
Scopio Magazine invites submissions from all fields and disciplines coming from the Architecture, Art and Image universe, in which artistic research within architecture may be considered relevant.
The Visual Essay format allows authors to combine text and image, either still or moving, on its web platform, creating space for practice research and in this way challenging the dominance of writing in academic research. We encourage the submission of work exploring visual strategies which are able to integrate technical and artistic aspects by using imagery, namely photography, as a mental device that leads to a new perception of architecture, space and their experiences.
Peer-review process
Submitted papers are subject to a process of double-blind peer review, which means that both the reviewers and the author identities are concealed throughout the review process. Papers will be reviewed by two scholars. Submitted papers can be accepted, rejected or returned with the recommendation to revise and resubmit after the process of revision, as per the comments of scopio Magazine reviewers. Please see our Reviewers Guidelines.
Visual Essay submissions do not follow a process of blind peer review. Submitted proposals will be selected by the editor(s), according to their quality and relevance to the theme of the volume and subject to editorial review, to be conducted by no less than two editors.
Deadlines
In this new model of continuous publication we only have specific deadlines for submisssions related with the Open Call for SCOPIO & CONTRAST International Conference and its section SCOPIO & CONTRAST OPEN CALL.
Submissions to the other sections of scopio Magazine AAI are open continuously and submsssions that are accepted after peer review are released online for open review.
Continuous publication and Ahead of Print
Continuous publication will positively impact the Open Review process by enabling Open Review for every submission that is accepted for publication. Upon acceptance, submissions will be preliminarily published online for a one-month Open Review period, during which they will be accessible for public comments. This opportunity allows authors to consider the feedback received and implement necessary revisions and corrections. Following this period of review and revision, the submission undergoes a final copy-editing process. Subsequently, the revised and finalized version is published as an ePub Ahead of Print (AoP), ensuring a more dynamic and responsive publication process that benefits both authors and the wider community.
The way articles are to be cited
With the adoption of continuous publication, there will indeed be adjustments to how articles are cited. As soon as accepted publications are made available online, they are assigned a permanent Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which facilitates their citation and ensures their longevity in the digital space. During the period an issue is considered "in progress," it becomes crucial to specify the version of the article being cited. This detail should be included in the citation to accurately reflect the version of the work referenced, accommodating the dynamic nature of continuous publication and the possibility of subsequent revisions or updates to the articles.

Conformance to principles of publication ethics is expected of all parties involved in the act of publishing. Editors, Authors and Reviewers are required, in particular, to abide by the following standards (based on the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors of the Committee on Publication Ethics – COPE).
Editors: Based on the review report of the referees, the editor can accept, reject, or request modifications to the manuscript. The editor must ensure that each manuscript is evaluated solely on the basis of academic merit and that information regarding manuscripts submitted by the authors is not disclosed to anyone other than the reviewers and other editorial advisers, as appropriate. The editor must not use unpublished information in the editor's own research without the express written consent of the author. Editors must take reasonable responsive measures when ethical complaints are presented concerning a submitted or published manuscript.
Authors: Authors should present an accurate account of their original research as well as an objective discussion of its significance. Authors must ensure that they have written entirely original works and that any work of others authors, or sources have been appropriately credited and referenced. Plagiarism in all its forms is unacceptable: scopio Magazine uses the software “Turnitin” for its detection. Authors should not submit the same manuscript simultaneously to more than one publication at a time. The corresponding author should ensure that there is a full consensus of all co-authors in approving the final version of the paper and its submission for publication.
Reviewers: Information regarding manuscripts submitted by authors should be kept confidential. Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must not be used for personal advantage. If the selected referee feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript, he should excuse himself from the review process. If the reviewer feels he does not meet the conditions to complete the review of the manuscript within the stipulated time, this information must be communicated to the editor immediately. Reviews should be done objectively and observations should be formulated clearly with supporting arguments. Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have any conflicts of interest.
