Science, society, and the environment: Transdisciplinarity as an epistemological challenge
Main Article Content
Abstract
The second half of the 20th century witnessed a shift from "normal" to "post-normal" science, driven by its deepening engagement with society. The need to pay greater heed to the perspectives of non-scientists—coupled with the emergence, within culture and society, of an ideal favouring a transdisciplinary approach to knowledge—poses a formidable challenge for a "scientific field" jealously guarding its autonomy. Taking the project of a new ecology (envisioned as a new, open, and non-reductionist science) as a central case study, this paper reflects on the difficulties of operationalising transdisciplinary practice and examines the implications for scientific objectivity when faced with the imperative to address trans-epistemic concerns.
