Abstract

The Potential of Insects in Ecosystems as a project emerged during the 2022-2023 academic year at ESFF and continued into 2023-2024. This project stemmed from the integration of knowledge and methodological practices from three distinct yet complementary fields—Social and Human Sciences, Visual Arts, and Science and Technology—working collaboratively to receive and share knowledge and experience. The project fostered open, creative, and meaningful learning, with the aim of exploring the potential of insects in ecosystems. This interdisciplinary group successfully produced a natural pigment extracted from the insect Dactylopius coccus, commonly known as cochineal. The extraction yielded colors ranging from black to red. This natural pigment was provided to Visual Arts students, enhancing practices that contribute to the implementation of true democratic citizenship.
