The April Revolution and teachers' unionism in Portugal

Abstract
The 1970s were marked by considerable mobilisation in education in Portugal. In the middle of this decade, the first trade union organisations for state school teachers were created, following the closure in 1933 of all civil servants' associations, including those for teachers. To frame the discussion of teachers‘ union organisations during and after the revolutionary period (1974-75), this article must begin with a brief mention of the emergence of teachers’ organisations at the beginning of the 20th century. It is also important to briefly characterise teaching under the authoritarian Salazar regime, the same regime that abolished all teachers' organisations linked to the official education system. Finally, we will analyse the reappearance of teachers' organisations, first as a form of resistance to the Salazar regime and then as a recognised, and indeed praised, trade union activity after the April 1974 revolution.
