In this article we aim to analyze – from an anthropological perspective – the everyday
practices regarding children’s rearing and education in communitarian initiatives. In opposition to
other approaches, our objective is to examine the way in which the «informality» of these experiences
is related to other collective initiatives amongst the subaltern sectors. As well, we analyze
the way in which these initiatives involved the collaboration with highly formalized institutions,
such as the State. In addition, we will demonstrate that improvisation and deliberate actions in
communitarian education experiences are not only not-opposed, but also they alternate in dynamic
and complex ways. These statements are the product of our fieldwork, which took place in the North area of Buenos Aires suburbs (Gran Buenos Aires), and the analysis was developed from an
ethnographic approach.
