New forms of citizenship, European integration and the reconfiguration of universities

Abstract

This article examines the impact of the new forms of citizenship and European construction on the university. If we consider the new forms of citizenship as directed towards identity rather than territory, and European construction as the interweaving of four metaphors (the flag, the association, the network and the bazaar), what are the implications for a university that has traditionally produced, preserved and disseminated national culture? Can the university contribute to making Europe both more competitive and more social, and, at the same time, help ensure that both European integration and new forms of citizenship are more reflective?
